The Benefits of Aqua Aerobics
Aqua aerobics, also known as water aerobics, are exercises usually performed in a pool with a group of participants. Classes typically last 45-55 minutes and can be performed by people of most any age.
Health Benefits of Aqua Aerobics
There are a multitude of substantial health benefits when participating in aqua aerobics. People work out major and minor muscle groups by actively moving about in the water. They can perform calisthenics, plus bending and flexibility exercises with or without supplementary devices such as flotation equipment or recreational accessories that they can hold in their hands.
They condition their heart and lungs by aerobically maintaining a moderate pace according to the class instructor's guidelines. The instructor often stands outside of the pool area and gives verbal directions. Participants can be elderly as well. The exercises help develop extensive joint range of motion without putting any significant impact of stress on either the upper or lower body.
Exercises such as water stepping, twisting, spinning, shoulder lifts, neck curls, and forward bends allow the exerciser to experience a strengthening not only of muscles and joints but also of tendons, ligaments and bones. It also greatly benefits the internal organs other than the heart and lungs such as the kidneys, liver and abdominal area due to the increased blood circulation that becomes oxygen and nutrient rich during the performance of the various movements and exercises.
Participants can gradually build up their stamina and endurance levels without any serious potential risk of impact injuries due to the lack of gravity forces being exerted on their entire bodies from the freedom of movement they can experience in a water environment. It's important that elderly participants get clearance from their physicians being joining in any exercise program no matter how mild including aqua aerobics.
A swimming pool is the most common environment for aqua aerobics to take place. This environment allows the largest group of participants to get involved in the exercises without any sense of overcrowding or restriction of any bodily movements. The sport can be very emotionally and physiologically rewarding and beneficial to a wide population of participants. It's commonly performed all across the world in pools indoors and outdoors.
