The Benefits of B Vitamins/Symptoms of Deficiency Part 1 –B1 and B2

The most interesting vitamin to me is Vitamin B

Thiamine (B1)

First the benefits; People who suffer from epilepsy and take the drug phenytoinmay benefit from taking Thiamine. People with cardiovascular diseases also have an increased need for thiaminsupplementation. Requirements increase with diets high in carbs and sugars. Thiamin supply the body with energy, "stress formula" supplements reduces the effects of stress and fatigue.

Deficiency causes beriberi. Symptoms of this disease of the nervous system include excessive weight loss, emotional imbalaance, impaired sensory perception, weakness and pain in the limbs, periods of irregular heartbeat, and edema (swelling of bodily tissues). Heart failure and death may occur in advanced cases. Chronic thiamine deficiency can also cause an irreversible psychosis characterized by amnesia.

Riboflavin (B2)

First the benefits; Riboflavin can help prevent cataracts, probably because of its close relationship with glutathione, an antioxidant. In a study of 408 Boston-area women, those who had the highest intake of riboflavin had the lowest level of cataract formation and lens opacity. Riboflavin may be helpful to people with sickle-cell disease. Higher doses have proven to reduce migraine headaches. Older adult women who exercise have higher riboflavin needs than those who exercise less frequently.

Deficiency causes ariboflavinosis. Symptoms may include cracks in the lips, high sensitivity to sunlight, inflammation of the tongue, pseudo-syphilis (particularly affecting the scrotum or labia majora and the mouth). Other signs of Riboflavin deficiency includes itchy irritated eyes, itchy mucous membranes (nose/mouth/throat), itchy lips and skin.

In the next VitaminJoeissue we'll look at the benefits and signs of deficiencies of Niacinamide(B3) and Pyridoxine(B6).

Until then Peace-Out!
