. Unfortunately sit ups, crunches and any other of the traditional ab exercises you see people doing do not burn fat. Cardio exercises are good for burning fat but they do not do anything for building muscle. So what is a person to do?

Well, I would like to talk about a device I have discovered recently called a kettle bell. It is a cannon ball shaped piece of equipment with a handle on it and using it combines cardio and muscle building. It is an incredibly versatile piece of equipment and there are literally hundreds if not thousands of exercises you can do with them. But, best of all, they burn calories better than anything out there. Researchers have shown that you can burn as many as 20 calories a minute with these.

So, that being said, here are some of the best abs exercises that you can do to burn fat and build muscle.

Around the body pass, simply take a KB and pass it from one hand to another around your body. Do this in both directions the same amount of times. It may seem easy, and it is, but it will work your abs.


The halo is another deceptively simple exercise in which you hold a KB by the handle in a bottoms up position at your chest. Simply rotate it around your head in one direction for a certain amount of repetitions and then the other direction.

My all time favorite ab exercise is the figure 8 with a lift. In this exercise you simply pass the KB between your legs on a figure 8 pattern. Each time you had off to the other hand you lift yourself up and briefly bring thee KB to your chest before starting over again.

By and far the all time best abs exercises that you can do to burn fat and build muscle is the KB swing. This is simply swinging the KB between your legs, thrusting out with your hips so that you launch your arms while they are holding the KB. This can be done with both arms or one handed. Because it is a ballistic move it will really get your heart rate pumping. This move also targets the muscles of your core (your abs) like no other.

Now, in the 1990s a team of Japanese researchers lead by Dr. Izumi Tabata discovered that you can burn significantly more calories by working out only 4 minutes a day than you can with more traditional low intensity cardio workouts for longer periods of time. They developed the Tabata protocol which is simply 8 20 second periods where you exert yourself as hard as you can with only a 10 second rest in between. The Tabata protocol is ideal for the KB swing and, if you do this on a daily basis, you could lose as much as 4.5 pounds a week.
