The Best Destinations For Walking Holidays In Spain

The Via Santiago de Compostela

The Via Santiago de Compostela

One of the first places that comes to mind if you're thinking of taking walking holidays in Spain is the famous pathway to Santiago de Compostela. Also known to English speakers as The Way of St. James, the Via de Santiago ends up at the beautiful Church of St. James, which is believed to be home to the remains of the apostle himself. The route is travelled by hundreds of Christian pilgrims every year who make the journey to see the tomb of St. James, although the walk is popular with walkers of all backgrounds, both religious and non-religious. There are plenty of accommodation options along the way, from camping to luxury hotels, where you can recharge your batteries after a long day's walking.

The Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, Andalucia

The Sierra Nevada is Spain's highest mountain range and is the ideal destination for holidaymakers who really want to test themselves to the limit. Located in southern Spain, this mountain range is beautiful and benefits from a mild climate, making it the perfect place for an active out of season break. If you're up for the challenge, why not try climbing Mulhacen, the range's highest peak, which stands at a massive 3,482m tall?

The mild Spanish climate means that you can walk in the Sierra Nevada almost all year round. In winter, the crisp air and blue skies will refresh you, whilst the autumn landscapes will take your breath away. At the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, you'll find Granada, which offers plenty of sights, restaurants and hotels making it a good place to start or end your trip.

Aragon, Pyrenees

Straddling the border between France and Spain, the Pyrenees is popular with skiers during the winter months, as well as being a favourite with walkers during the summer. Whether you choose a guided hiking trip or plan your own walks, the Pyrenees offer a varied landscape with some tricky climbs as well as long paths and stunning scenery along the way.

The city of Zaragosa can be found in the Aragon region of Spain in the Pyrenean valleys. With amazing sights and a host of delicious restaurants, Zaragosa is the perfect stop-off point, allowing you to get some well-deserved rest and relaxation during your walking holiday.

Whether you like long, hard treks and cosy nights round the campfire or shorter walks with nights in luxurious hotels, the varied walking options available in Spain mean you're bound to find something to suit your needs. With guided walks on offer, as well as the chance to strike out independently with a group of friends, a walking holiday is an active and sociable break, which is perfect for young and old alike.
