There is a misconception and some misinformation floating around that fever blisters and canker sores are the same, when they are in fact different. Canker sores are usually white in color and they appear on the inside of the mouth. Cold sores on the other hand are found on the outside of the mouth, around the lips and can even spread over the rest of your face. Cold sores start as fever blisters that rupture and crust over while canker sores do not have such life cycles.

No medication has been discovered which can cure cold sores completely. However, there are many medications available in the market that can reduce the pain, discomfort and duration of these nasty little sores. In addition to these pharmaceuticals there are also natural home remedies that are quite effective.
