Your body will need the extra day to get the repairs underway properly. With time it will learn how to handle it better and recovery time will be shorter. You will also need to fall back to the 3 day routine when you are in a process of heavy training to give your body a chance to rebuild properly the extra damage you are doing to it.
It's ok to work out even if you are sore, in fact the workout will stretch muscles and help with the soreness. Working out when you are sore is fine but working out when you are in pain in not A good indicator of if you are ready to work out is are you able to get dressed out in the locker-room as easily as you could before your last workout.
