Renowned for its lush green forests and mountains, Coorg, also known as Kodagu, is popularly dubbed as Switzerland of India. Coorg is also known as Indias coffee bowl as it is credited with being the biggest producer of coffee. Coffee is extensively grown and most of the hillsides are dotted with plantations. Also grown are orange, pepper and cardamom.
Talacauveri, Brahmagiri peak, Nagarahole wild life sanctuary, Bylakuppe, and Madikeri are some of the best known sightseeing options in Coorg.
The distance between Bangalore and Coorg is approximately 260 km. To cover this distance by road it takes about five hours. The best way to travel from Bangalore to Coorg is by road. From Bangalore follow the SH 17, the four-lane highway till you reach Mysore, passing through Bidadi, Ramanagara, Chennapatna, Maddur, Mandya and Srirangapatna. From Mysore take the SH 88 or Hunsur Road and pass through the towns of Yelwal, Hunsur, Kempalapura, Piriyapatna, Bylakuppe, Kushalnagara, Suntikoppa, finally terminating in Madikeri, the district headquarters of Coorg.
Karnataka State buses ply regularly from Bangalore to Coorg. The travel time is around 6 hours. The Coorg bus stand is situated at a distance of 3 km from the city centre from where auto-rickshaws are available to the city. Overnight buses are also available from Bangalore to Coorg that are more convenient.
There are various private operators that provide different types of buses like airbus, AC luxury seater, AC sleeper, semi sleeper, and 2 X 2 coaches with a fare ranging between Rs 200 to Rs 1,000. One can book a seat on these buses through various web portals.
If travelling with your family or in a group the best way is to hire a taxi from Bangalore and drive down to Coorg. Approximate cost of the cab ranges from Rs. 12 to Rs. 25 per kilometre, depending upon the type of car you have hired.
One can also drive your own car from Bangalore to Coorg. You can also make pit stops at the various places en route like at Bylakuppe and Talacauveri. This is ideal if you like driving and do not mind taking a few breaks on the way.
There are no direct trains running between the stations of Bangalore and Coorg. But one alternatively can take a direct train from Bangalore to Mysore, the nearest railway station, which takes about 3 hours. From Mysore railway station, take a direct bus or hire a cab to Coorg. This is not an ideal option.
