The Best Method To Clean Your Spray Rig

In this Paint Sprayer Reviews article we're going to go over the steps to properly cleaning your airless sprayer after each use

. I do believe it is important to note that in this post I will be referring to the steps for cleaning an airless sprayer, not an HVLP or a cup gun styled power painter. Although some of these techniques may vary with regards to cleaning those tools, the principles behind why cleaning is important and some of the tips I'll give will likely be applicable.

When you first remove your new pump from it's packaging, everything looks so clean and shiny. If you are anything like I used to be for a number of years, you'll swear that this brand new machine is going to remain looking new as long as you own it. Not surprisingly, that way of thinking soon changes when you realize how utterly impossible it truly is to keep this spray rig looking new for very long. I think many of us fall into that trap... it's hard to do that even when you are the only person using it. And once you're employees start working with it, well you can forget about it looking pretty again.

No matter how the outside of your airless spray rig looks, the inside of it has to be correctly cleaned if you'd like it to last. An improperly cleaned sprayer can lead to costly repairs, down time, new parts, more labor, an unacceptable spray pattern and more. None of these issues are appealing, but by making certain that the pump is flushed out after every use will avoid a lot of of these problems.

None of the procedures are difficult, but at the end of the day it is easy to cut corners or put it off. Develop good habits for you and your crew ahead of time by correctly looking after your sprayer. I've listed below some very basic but important things to remember. These are not specific or detailed enough to cover all of the steps you probably need to take, so please read your user manual and follow the manufacturers cleaning and maintenance procedures. My list is meant to be supplemental tips from the field, after having cleaned 1000's of these rigs over thirty years.

Work with clean paint... Always strain your paint using either a five gallon strainer bag or even a paper throw away one. Try to keep your buckets and work pots clean as well. All kinds of debris, dirt and other contaminants will be going through your rig and gun if you don't work clean.

Keep your sprayer on a clean platform... Never allow your airless to be placed in the dirt or over grass. Always keep a clean sturdy piece of plywood for your sprayer and paint work area. All it takes is for your foot on your siphon tube to set down once in the dirt and you've got a real mess on your hands. Believe me, seems like common sense doesn't it... but you'd be surprised at how many times this happens.

Keep a separate set of hoses... I used to own three separate sets of hoses, one for latex, one for solvent based paints, and one for clear polyurethanes. Latex cleans up with water, oil based paints clean up with mineral spirits, and clear urethanes or sealers need to remain crystal clear. This is certainly optional, but it really makes clean up much easier.

After you've flushed the rig and clear water is all that's left, bleed the lines and than be sure to clean any filters within the pump or the gun, and take off the foot and pick-up tube (if the design allows that) and clean every one of these parts before reassembling them. As soon as that's complete, flush another few gallons through the machine, lines and gun again ensuring everything is clear and clean.

By now your sprayer ought to be clean and ready to put up. Bleed the pressure in your paint lines again, and carefully wrap the line, wrapping it neatly around the frame on your machine. Make certain you have no kinks or bends in your hose, and you will be set for the next job.
