The Best Nonstick Cookware Might Not Be The Best For You

Nonstick, is the most popular type of cookware in both the United States and Canada

, having captured some 60% of the market of both countries since it was first introduced. It is likely then, that youve got some nonstick pots and pans in your kitchen right now.

It should be noted, however, that its not the only game in town, and if youre looking for the best cookware, you may want to turn your attention to pots and pans made from other materials.

For example, an old favorite is cast iron. Its been around for longer than America has existed as a country, and Ive still got (and use!) a well seasoned cast iron frying pan handed down to me from my great, great grandmother. Great stuff, and I wouldnt trade it for the best nonstick cookware on the market!

But of course, for a lot of people, cast iron might be a little old school, and if thats the case, then theres always ceramic, stainless steel, or copper clad to consider.

Most people though, like nonstick cookware for its ease of cleanup, and in fact, nonstick varieties almost always make up big portions of any list of the best rated cookware, for this reason (and for the fact that they tend to heat remarkably evenly.

Still, you should be aware that many nonstick brands use PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) in their manufacture. Now, it is not at all clear what the long term effect of exposure to PFOA is to humans, but studies indicate that it can be harmful, and if youre using a set of pots and pans that is more than five years old, then youre using a set made with PFOA.

Fortunately, if youre a fan of nonstick, youre in luck. There are a number of companies that make well rated sets that offer a good blend of price and performance, combining it with the ease of cleanup that is nonsticks biggest strength. Among the companies offering non PFOA sets, give Earth Pan, Starfrit, and Green Pan a look. You might find just what youve been searching for, and wind up with a new set of cookware that will serve you well for years to come!
