The Best Of Rome In A Day

Rome wasnt built in a daybut can it be visited in one day

? If you are like many people, you may find yourself in Rome on business, but have a day to spare. So why not ditch your Blackberry and step outside your central Rome hotel and explore the city.

The Hotspots

Sistine ChapelThe museum opens at 8:45, but make sure you are there no later than 7:30 (Hey, if youve only got one day you need to hit the ground running early.) Once you are inside you will be dazzled with Michelangelos stunning frescoes and delighted that you made the effort.

St. PetersNext stop on your one day tour should be St. Peters Basilica as it is just a mere ten minute walk from the Sistine Chapel. It is the largest church ever built and Michelangelos breathtaking Pieta, located in the first chapel, will leave you in awe. The only problem is when you return to your central Rome hotel, you will feel like you are in a shoe box when compared to the enormity of the Basilica.

Piazza NavonaThis is one of Romes most beautiful piazzas and was originally the site of a stadium. Nowadays, it is the perfect place to enjoy a coffee and take in the view of Berninis famous Four Rivers Fountain.

Campo deFioriIf you walk out of the door of your central Rome hotel on time for the first part of your itinerary, you will reach Campo deFiori before noon to see the flower and food market in full swing. Just steps away you will find SantAndrea della Valle. It was at this church where Puccini had the inspiration for his famous opera, Tosca.

TastevereEnjoy a quiet lunch in the relaxing Tastevere district where you will be wowed with a tremendous selection of cafes and restaurants. Once youve done a bit of people watching and refuelled with some food, you will be ready for the next stop on the tour.

La Bocca Della VeruitaYour next destination will be located in the portico of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Legend has it that if you stick your hand in the mouth of the La Bocca Della Veruita and you tell a lieit will bite your hand off!

ColosseumHopefully you have all your fingers in tact when walking to the world-renowned Colosseum. Even in its ruined state, it is a magnificent sight and it is astounding to imagine the spectacular events that were once staged there.

PantheonJust a fifteen minute walk north-west and you will find yourself face-to-face with the Pantheon, one of Ancient Romes most well-preserved churches. Built in the second century by Hadrian, the Pantheon looks as though it were a mere hundred years old, not thousands.

Phew! Exhausted? Well pat yourself on the back, youve just seen Rome in a day! Now you can head back to your central Rome hotel and feel like you conquered the city!
