The Best Places To Find Scrap Copper
As copper is one of the most valuable scrap metals on the market
, it is the one that most people like to find in order to sell on to a dealer. You can find it in a number of places, from those that are in full view to those that you would never have thought to check. If you are trying to make a little extra cash (whilst also doing your bit for the environment), perhaps finding some scrap copper is the hobby for you. And heres where you could find it:
Household Fittings
This location is especially true of older homes; pipes and other sorts of plumbing will most likely consist of copper. Keep in mind that it is illegal to take copper from a house you do not own, but demolition sites and renovations where people have simply thrown the metal out are fair game.
Appliances
They used to actually contain a fair amount of copper and even the appliances of today contain enough for you to sell on for profit. Look for old washing machines, refrigerators, dryers and microwaves that all contain copper coils and wires. Keep in mind that the older the appliance the more copper it is likely to contain. Avoid removing the copper from refrigerators and air conditioners (unless you know how), otherwise you risk releasing toxic gases into the air.
Wiring
If you are trying to grab the plumbing from demolition and renovation sites, you should also try and grab the old wiring (which contains a fair bit of copper once you remove the insulation). Keep in mind that the electricians working on the project may have beaten you to it, however.
Garage Sales and Thrift Stores
Regularly checking out the garage sales and second hand stores in your area could also become a great source of copper that you can sell for scrap. Look for old kettles, pots and spigots that contain enough copper to make your money back (plus a little profit).
Cars
If you have an old car that no longer works, it can be worth going through the whole thing (including the engine) and removing any copper that has been used in it. Look for things like radiator coils and heating cores, as well as onboard computers.
By taking a look in the above locations, you are sure to source a considerable amount of unwanted copper that you are able to sell on to a dealer for a pretty tidy profit. Keep in mind that, on top of making some extra cash, you are making a considerable difference to the environment. So, where are you going to look for your next copper supply?
