The Best Way To Fill An Rv Water Tank

There is a correct way to make sure your water tank is filled with fresh water

. Even though it seems like a simple thing its best to learn the right way before attempting to add water to the tank. The system for freshwater in any RV makes it possible for travelers to store and keep their water when they are on the go and out on the road. These tanks are also great even when at a campground because not every camping area has the proper water hook ups.

Water that is kept in the fresh water tank is sent to the internal water system through a twelve volt RV water pump that is operated by the battery thats used by the RV itself. Regular cleaning of the water tank is something that should be done in order to keep the bacteria levels down. If left without sterilizing RV tanks can become odorous and unclean. Maintaining any RV water tank is of the utmost importance to keep the contents safe and clean no matter where the RV dock or travels.

To fill up your water tank you will need a water hose that is okay for potable water. Once this item is in hand the following steps can be taken to fill the tank.

First, find the opening for the tank. The spout should be covered by a white cap and the spout will be white as well. Often times this is near the other RV connections on the outside side panel of the RV and sometimes is on the other side of a small locked panel.

Next, take the cap off of the filling spout. Two different types of caps are usually in use, either a twist off cap or a flip cap. Take care not to lose the cap if it is a twist off. Remove the plug for the vent and keep it in a safe place. Pull in an upward way to remove the plug. Connect your clean hose to a faucet that is within reach. This hose should be the potable one described earlier. Run some water out of the hose to make sure its clean and free of extra debris or fugitive dirt.

Now, take the potable hose and insert it into the refill spout. This will begin the fill up of the tank. Keep in mind that a halfway filled tank will weight less for traveling than a fully filled tank. If you wish to keep the payload weight down then only partially filling the tank at this point may be justified.

Check the water level and when the fill level is where you want it to be then turn off the faucet and take the hose out of the filling spout. Replace the vent plug and then rinse and replace the fill spout cap.

Now you are ready to travel with your fresh water tank intact and ready to go.
