The Best Way To Verify Identities
In the United States and in other developed countries
, proof of identity is always required in almost any official transaction or activity - applying for a job, requesting credit at a store, applying for a credit card or opening a bank account. Such transactions require personal information which is critical to the approval or non-approval of that transaction. Employees of government institutions or offices, business entities or financial institutions are trained to verify identities before any transaction can even be processed. This is a standard procedure enforced strictly in order to prevent identity theft.
A serious problem not only in the United States but across the globe, identity theft is guarded against by business-specific protocol to verify identities with the highest level of accuracy. The following lists down the best and commonly used identity verification methods:
Authentic documents. Require authentic documents to prove identity. Government-issued identification cards are usually specified as valid proof of identity. This includes drivers license, a Social Security card, valid passport, and military photograph identification. In some countries, a centralized or unified ID system is issued which contains all pertinent information such as drivers license number, Social Security number, employee number, tax account number, among others. In the absence of a centralized ID as in most cases, two separate identity cards (e.g., drivers license and passport) will be required to validate and verify identities.
Physical Proof of Identity. Always require for the physical proof of identification; not just photocopies. Request to see the person's driver's license and verify the licenses validity through the state that issued the license. With the physical ID, make a photocopy of the license instead of just writing down the details. This way, you will have a copy of the presented identification in your possession which can be used as evidence in case of falsification or tampering is discovered. The verified drivers license will validate the personal details of the individual holding the license. There are states that will provide the details of the Social Security number linked with an individual's driver's license, for second validation. Some states will also provide free verification of drivers licenses issued through their official websites. Driving records of individuals may be requested for a fee, by prospective employers or other persons of interest. Such report will include the name and address of the person for whom the driving record was produced.
Verify Social Security Number. If presented with a Social Security number (or card), verify the validity of the person's Social Security number through direct access on the Social Security Administrations official website. Make a photocopy of the presented Social Security card to validate the correct number. The Social Security Administration will provide a report verifying the personal details associated with the number.
Inspect the Passport. Passports in the United States are only issued upon satisfactorily establishing identity through presentation of valid identification forms such as driver's license, a birth certificate and military identification. Passport validity is 10 years from the issuance date. Check the passport against tampering.
As additional verification protocol, always make copies of identification to keep on file for future verification research or counter-validation. If the information has discrepancy, double check the information provided before taking any drastic action against the person. The possibility of human error (failing to update address information, or failing to notify change of address, etc.) may have caused the discrepancy. All personal information should be treated with utmost confidentiality and care. Such information should never be disclosed to other people.
So if you are in a situation where meticulous verification and validation procedures on your identity are being enforced, you know that its protocol. However, make sure you get the name, designation, ID number (if any) of the person validating your personal details. Having your own records of those to whom your private information have been disclosed is a safeguard you need to have for future reference.
