Climate is an aggregate of weather. Which means an individual weather event, even an extreme one, like snow in June in the northern hemisphere, will say nothing about climate. However, when these weather events are combined over a period of time, climate trends start appearing. Conclusively, snowing in June on a regular basis is enough to eventually say the climate has indeed changed.
Worldwide weather has become more extreme over thirty years or more now, and although every individual weather event in explicable by normal variation, frequency and intensity for these events is not. In Britain, we are currently getting much more rain than was normal at this time of year until recent summers. But rain up until early July was not and is not abnormal; yet how much it has been raining, both in amount and frequency shows abnormalities. What we are seeing is normal weather patterns, yet more intense and more extreme, which is to be expected. With more energy that is put into a system, it is likely more will come out. Heat is energy and weather is a system.
Despite a change in weather which is increasingly growing more unusual and therefore more worrying, people are still hoping for a white Christmas. 2010 was Britains last true white Christmas, with many stations across the nation reporting not only a sighting of crystal snowflakes falling, but also of them coating the ground and giving the residents of the area a true white Christmas. There are many factors in which snow could be formed, and could eventually settle when on earth.
Precipitation falls, as four main types, rain, snow, sleet or hail. Snow fall happens when air temperature is anywhere below 2c. Unlike most people will believe, air temperature does not have to be at or anywhere near zero degrees or in minus temperatures. Falling snow does indeed begin to melt once air temperature rises above freezing, however the air around snowflakes will cool once a snowflake begins to melt. If temperatures rise above two degrees Celsius, falling snowflakes will begin to melt quickly enough for them to land and settle as sleet. Warmer still, precipitation will fall as rain.
Individual snowflakes are created by ice crystals which are stuck within clouds high in atmospheric temperatures which are suitable for those crystals to combine. Air temperatures determine how successful a snowflake will be, how large it is likely to be, and how long it is likely to last. Snowflakes which fall through dry and cool air are usually smaller, more powdery snowflakes which have trouble sticking together. Often these snowfalls are unlikely to find purchase when they reach ground level, and will melt away fairly quickly.
Temperatures need only rise just a little above 0c in order for snowflakes to become wet. These are flakes which will find it simpler to become ground sitting snowflakes. These are usually snowflakes which cause white Christmases which are so fondly sought after when December and festivities come around. Wet snow is better for childish Christmas times and snow men making, yet worse for driving around and getting home in.
