Motels can usually be found close to interstate highways. Motels are generally single floor buildings and are cheaper than hotels.

Motels are one story and are about as simple as it gets when it comes to renting a bed for the night. All you do is pick up a key at the front desk and pay for a room.

Hotels are more formal than motels. They have lobbies with waiting rooms, some even have bellhops and people to park your car for you. Hotels can be found in the inner city and have many stories. They also both large and small rooms, most of which are larger than any room at a motel. Sometimes you will be able to pay larger sums of money for a large pad or suite if it happens to be a special occasion.

Hotels also have restaurants. There is usually a breakfast or brunch for which you are complemented a continental breakfast and can pay extra for the special breakfast items. Some hotels also have bars if you happen to be a night owl.

To sum up, the main difference to remember is location when thinking about a hotel or motel. Yes, hotels are more formal, but they are also in the inner city, so if you plan on taking a long trip across the country you may prolong your journey. Motels may be cheaper, but they are mostly for people who only need to spend the night and leave early. So depending on which one suits your needs better, do not forget the difference between motels and hotels.
