The Big Green Egg Smoker Vs. Other Barbecue Grills
If you are a grill fanatic, you've most likely seen the Big Green Egg grill
. It is a ceramic barbeque grill which can be used as a barbeque grill, smoker and even an outdoor oven. It is so flexible you'll be able to create everything from hamburgers and steaks and other standard grill foods to desserts, bread as well as pizza.
Eggheads love the Big Green Egg, but you might be asking what makes the Egg (as it's fondly called) out-shine other barbeque grills.
Possibly the largest difference is the appearance. The Big Green Egg is well, green and shaped like an egg. Although I cannot say precisely why it is green, I can point out that the egg shape appeared to be created (on purpose) to offer the power to regulate and maintain heat in the bbq grill better than other grills.
The second most significant difference is the material the grill is made of. Rather than being made using metal, the Big Green Egg features thick ceramic walls. Ceramic is substantially more sturdy in comparison with other materials, which means the Egg will last longer than other grills and smokers, it can be used all year (even in very cold temps). It is also safer, particularly if there are small children playing close by, since the ceramic material is cooler than regular metal grills and because you always grill with the lid down, which means you won't have to worry about flare-ups.
There are lots of other differences but one of my favorite features may be the following the Big Green Egg has. There are plenty of Egg followers and gatherings all through the U.S., and Eggheads are always willing to share their stories, advice as well as recipes at gatherings and on the Egghead forum. I can't think of another bbq grill that has this kind of following.
I will admit, the Egg does have a few drawbacks when compared to other barbecue grills. For example, it is not a cheap bbq grill. You can expect to fork out about $700 to get a large Big Green Egg. Also, you need to use lump wood charcoal, which is not always easy to find and is usually a bit more expensive compared to traditional charcoal briquettes. The Big Green Egg also has a smaller grilling surface when compared with many gas grills, which means you'll need to have a back-up bbq grill if you're grilling for a lot of people.
However, the versatility of the Big Green Egg, the ability to grill, smoke or even bake with your Egg, as well as the awesome results you get (the Egg is very forgiving, even for newbie cooks) are worth the purchase price. If you are a barbecue enthusiast and you do a lot of smoking in addition to grilling you are going to love the quality and the results you get when cooking with the Big Green Egg.
