The Big Picture Overview of CTPM
Successful online-business-building is all about following the right process and smart work
. Do things right the first time, step by step... and good things happen.
So many businesses fail because they just "put up a site." And then, a few months later... "Nah... the Net didn't do anything for me!" These owners failed to recognize the fundamental reality of how people use the Net.
People use the Net to seek information, to look for solutions.
Success on the Net all begins with a critical offline-to-online mindset shift. This means replacing that well-known strategy of "location, location, location" in your mind with...
"Information, information, information."
In the offline world, traffic is relatively easy to achieve -- it's all about "location, location, location." An attractive, nicely merchandised store in a mall or on a high-traffic shopping street usually means instant traffic -- and sales, of course!
However, in the online world, no one just happens to walk past, see your business and enter. Surfers on the Net are not looking for you or your business. People search for information, for solutions. After all, if they knew you existed, they would not be searching. They would already be customers.
Online, you must generate your own traffic to be successful. Therefore, your primary task, well before you make your first sale to a customer (often well before that person is even aware that s/he is shopping!), is to provide the information that people are searching for, in a way that Search Engines like.
Information is what surfers want.
Bottom line?
If you don't attract free, targeted visitors via the Search Engines, if you don't convert them into warm, willing-to-buy customers, if you don't build that into your site from Day 1, you are going to end up working for your site. You will have to pay for advertising to build traffic, more than you can afford... and when you stop paying for advertising, your traffic will stop.
However, you can easily belong to the 2% of small business owners who succeed by following the C > T > P > M process carefully....
Content > Traffic > PREsell > Monetize
You will build a site that will be searched-and-found by prospective new customers. And this number will increase steadily as your site gains in reputation and relevance at the Search Engines -- the way a dam converts a stream into electrical current.
Whatever your niche or type of business, follow a step-by-step C > T > P > M process to generate income...
STEP 1) Create high-value CONTENT. Online, people search for information, look for solutions -- they are not looking for you. Give them what they want by converting your knowledge into high- quality, in -demand CONTENT.
STEP 2) Your theme-based topical content ranks high at the Search Engines, attracting free, targeted TRAFFIC... interested, open-to-you visitors.
STEP 3) Develop trust and credibility (i.e., PREsell) by OVERdelivering relevant, original, high-value information to these motivated pre-customers.
STEP 4) MONETIZE your warm, willing-to-buy visitors in various ways. Sell hard goods, e-goods, your personal or professional services... or all three. Or become a "pure infopreneur" and earn substantial income without selling at all, through Google Ads, affiliate fees, finder's fees and other techniques. A blend of monetization options will help you build a thriving, diversified business.
The key is to never be dependent on any one income source -- "all your eggs in one basket" is a high-risk strategy. By diversifying, your revenues increase, your business is more stable, and YOU are in charge of your business destiny.
But always remember... Traffic comes before Monetization. And it's Content that builds Traffic.
Content > Traffic > PREsell > Monetize
Make it your new business mantra. It will help you develop a valuable Web site.
What is a valuable Web site? It's one with equity, which means that it's defensible, sustainable, diversified, and strategically valuable to larger companies.
What kind of site is defensible? One with a good domain name, a good brand, traffic from many sources, diversified revenue sources, and measurable assets like newsletter subscribers and an RSS feed.
What kind of site is sustainable? One with a niche where consumer interest is not shrinking, it's growing. It's a site with low legal risk (ex., your content is original, and your domain name or Site Concept doesn't infringe on trademarks). You rank well on at least 2 of the Search Engines, and you get a large portion of your traffic from non-search sources like direct links, RSS subscribers, bookmarks and typeins, which means that it doesn't require cost-per-click (ex., AdWords) campaigns to maintain traffic and income levels.
What kind of site is diversified? You don't make most of your money from AdSense. You have at least a few other monetization methods.
What kind of site is strategically valuable? One that doesn't reflect negatively on the entity who owns it, and one that exists in a niche with a mature marketplace (it's not the next "up and coming" fad).
Implement the Content > Traffic > PREsell > Monetize strategy in planning your site from the beginning and you'll consistently build on a foundation that will bear fruit for the life of your site.
