The Birdlife of Argentina
Most people enjoy seeing birds, and whether you have just a mild interest or are an avid birder, you will enjoy spending a little time visiting some of the animal and bird reserves, all within reach of Buenos Aires. These birdlife reserves are mostly within reach of a day trip from Buenos Aires, and some of them even border on the city. Some of these sites offer guided tours and walks by knowledgeable birders. Before you visit them, it is a good idea to contact them and find out the conditions [eg, drought or flooding] as well as admission fees and times, and any other information to make your trip agreeable.Reserva Ecolgica Costanera Sur, just a few minutes from downtown Buenos Aires.Ribera Norte, near the northern suburbs of Buenos Aires.Vicente Lpez Ecological Reserve, near the northern suburbs of Buenos Aires.Otamendi Nature Reserve, approximately 70kms from Buenos Aires."El Destino" Private Reserve, a little more than 2 hours drive from Buenos Aires."El Palmar" National Park, about 4 hours drive away from the city.Iber Wetlands, a day trip. It is a spectacular tourist destination, but you need to allow a couple of days for the trip, or you can take a flight to the falls.Mar del Plata Port Nature Reserve in the CityHere are some more of the favourite birding sites in Argentina.Aconcagua Provincial ParkLos Cuevos de las ManosLake District / ArgentinaLaguna Blanca National ParkEl Palmar National ParkNahuel Huapi National ParkLanin National ParkPunta Tombo Provincial ReserveLos Alerces National ParkPeninsula ValdesBosques Petrificados National MonumentPerito Moreno National ParkLos Glaciares National ParkTierra del Fuego National ParkBirds are divided into passerines and non-passerine. More than half of all birds are passerines. Passerines are mostly birds that perch. When they sit on a branch, they have three toes forwards and one toe back.Non-passerines would include such birds as penguins, ducks, many seabirds, long legged birds that walk or wade, such as storks, herons and flamingoes, as well as many of the raptors, such as eagles and hawks, etc.Probably one of the birds that most readily springs to mind when you talk about birds and Argentina is the Andean Condor. It is one of those birds that bird lovers most dream of seeing. The Andean Condor, like most vultures, is not at all beautiful until you see it flying. Then it takes your breath away in its awesome grace and splendour. These huge birds have a wingspan of more than three meters. They nest on ledges on cliffs and lay eggs every second year, spending two years raising their chicks. Both parents help rear the young.Like other vultures they live on carrion, but are also capable of hunting newborn animals, and feeding on other birds' eggs. They provide no threat at all to farmers. At one time it was to be found all along the Andes Mountains, but it was hunted almost to extinction and was placed on the endangered species list in the 1973.The survival of the Andean Condor has become a special project of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in the US. The bird has made a dramatic comeback from the brink of extinction, with their help.Whether a tourist, a visitor or a new resident in Buenos Aires, you should be able to find really comfortable permanent, semi-permanent or temporary accommodation through your Inmobiliarias agent, Buenos Aires.Tourists looking for any type of comfortable accommodation have benefitedfrom the services of PropiedadesArgentina and Propiedades BuenosAires
