The Birth Of Door Handles

It was never formally documented when, who and where the Door Handles really are invented

. Most of us have been making our way through doors, using these little things, but never have thought of their origins. Apparently, one can admit that life can never be easier without these in our doors. So, where did these things really came from?

They say that inventing them went hand-in-hand with the invention of doors although, there was no clear evidence about it. Doors used during the earlier times (as early as the Egyptians) do not have the door handles that people have today. Most of the doors as seen in the ancient pictures and paintings do not have knobs or handles. Their doors were opened / closed either by using enormous strength in pushing and pulling, or by putting a little carving in the middle.

There are also claims that the Greeks were the ones who invented them to facilitate opening and closing of doors safely and easily. This also ended their smashing-the-door way of opening and closing their doors. The earliest documentation of inventing these handles was in the United States of America, as shown in the catalogues and illustrations way back in the 18th century. There was only a patent entry in 1878, for improvements on a door-closing device, named after Mr. Osbourn Dorsey. Although, it is not clear if that improvement points to the use of door handles.

As time passed by, the importance of putting handles in doors increased, making a very long evolution of how it is now. Before, doors only have simple bars or unmovable handles serving as knobs. Others only have holes in the middle of their doors for easy handling, which was then locked using leather ropes or strings as what can be seen in barns and animal sheds.

These handles were made of wood, usually circular in shape. Then, the use of wood evolved into using stronger and sturdier materials such as metals. It is not surprising that handles in the earlier civilizations have raw designs and technology. It was only during the 19th century that major developments materialized in them. Subsequently, lock mechanisms were also added to the simple handle for added functionality. Developments not only in usage arose through time, but also with the style and design. These knobs then became fashionable, such as those made of glass, gems and crystals, which serve as one of the "icing on cake" for most houses.
