Following the laptop came the smart phone, this certainly revolutionised many aspects of our modern communications technology, it was the first computer phone and with it came the ability to browse the Internet, access emails, download applications, and all the other expected phone features such as call and messages. The latest form we have seen the computer take is a derivative of the smart phone. The tablet computer has hit the ground running, as it seems to the first device that has successfully used the form factor to attract a wide range of consumers.

At its most basic level a tablet computer is a computing device, with a touch screen, that is larger than a smart phone. There is not a set size for a tablet computer; the iPad line has a screen size of just less than 10 inches but other tablets can be larger or smaller. As a general rule if a computing device uses an on screen interface and doesnt include any phone functions it is considered a tablet. However, if you werent confused already then manufacturers are now bringing out hybrid devices that are part laptop and part tablet. The device will usually come with a keyboard attached and the screen will swivel or fold down to cover the keyboard and present the tablet.

For many people the purpose behind a tablet computer might not seem clear, inevitably a laptop can perform more functions and is portable too. However, the incorporation of the touch screen has provided a number of implications. Aside from the novelty factor that certainly succeeds in drawing in many consumers a touch screen is an interface for control that has many creative avenues. For instance, the wavetable is a musical device that uses a touch screen as its interface and as a result is truly innovative.
