There is only one way to be smitten with someone and that is to put yourself out there. Give yourself a chance of meeting someone by actually doing something with your day. Sitting indoors and doing some extra work for the guys at the office certainly won't get you anywhere.
Going to walk the dog, or drinks with friends at bars is a start. You need to engage with people, embrace life and put yourself up there with the best of them. You need to want to meet someone obviously but if you do then get your body out there and meet someone.
In life we generally make our own luck. We ride it sometimes but generally that is because we have prepared ourselves properly. You need to be witty and interesting, whilst remaining open and not self absorbed. Listen to what the other person has got to say, and be interactive. By this I mean you need to respond to something they have said with a question about that topic. This will endear them to you a little more. You have taken an interest in something they have said and you are able to find familiar ground with them on that topic.
Doing these sorts of things and knowing how to talk to the opposite sex is the key. Nervousness and being awkward won't get you anywhere instead you need to be funny and confident. If you maintain these levels of confidence throughout you won't go far wrong.
