The Brilliant Samsung Omnia 7 Reviewed

Samsung have built a solid reputation for producing high specification

, popular mobile phones. Last years release of the Galaxy S saw them underline this with a superb Android handset. This year they are following on from that with the new Omnia 7, effectively the same phone but running the hugely impressive new OS from Microsoft, Windows 7.

The design team at Samsung have been hard at work on this model, constructing a chassis that moves away from the mas of plastic often found on their handsets, and giving us a neat looking phone with a largely metallic finish. This new finish certainly looks good plus it adds a high end feel when you are actually using the phone. Much thought also seems to have gone into what physical keys to add to this model, especially in an age where the majority of a phones functions are performed via touch sensitive buttons. The presence of a physical camera button is always welcomed, allowing quick and easy access to this facility. Looking at the front of the phone you will find a physical home key, making the unit not at all dissimilar to the Apple iPhone. Another similarity to the iPhone is in the slimline depth, which on this model measures just 11mm. Despite the inclusion of a massive 4 inch screen, when in the palm of your hand the device neither feels bulky or too large, and with a weight of just 138 grammes it is more like earlier generation smartphones rather than this new large screen generation.

Another element of the Samsung Omnia 7 that should prove attractive to prospective customers is the excellent screen incorporated in the phone. The gorgeous screen really stands out from the crowd, producing high resolution graphics and lifelike playback of your media recordings. Unlike many of their competitors, Samsung have opted not to utilise the more common TFT display in this phone, instead following along the lines of the excellent Galaxy S and using Super AMOLED. This is a step up from traditional AMOLED, and merges the two individual layers (touchscreen and display) into a single sheet. Not only does this greatly improve visibility in sunlight but helps achieve the aforementioned slim depth. The general experience online is amazing. The web browser is functional and the high powered processor makes light work of loading pictures and pages quickly. WiFi is supported by the phone, but if you find yourself travelling alot, the excellent 3G service is also covered, with ample back up in the form of GPRS and EDGE.

Samsung have stuck to the winning formula achieved with the excellent Galaxy S, and have basically replicated here with a few tweaks, the main one being an exciting new operating system. The result is a near perfect smart pone that will please experienced users and newcomers alike.
