The Broadheads For Bowhunting That Are Used Today
Originally, braodheads were weapons for battle
. As the name suggests, they were flat and had a broad base which tapered into a sharp and pointed tip. Today's broadheads for bowhunting have considerably improved since then.
The original broadheads were basically triangular. The way children typically draw arrows is how they looked. The shape could be perfectly triangular. However, there were others which were diamond shaped. The line at the base was broken to form an extra side for the diamond.
Many broadheads also featured additional blades along their edges. Usually the blades would be found on the equal sides of the triangle. Still other types would have hook like blades extending downwards from both sides of the base of the arrow tip, resembling introverted fins. Obviously those blades made it necessary to lacerate the flesh when the arrowhead was pulled out. As a rule the old type of broadhead was fixed on the shaft of the arrow.
People still use broadhead tips for arrows today. However, they are meant for hunting animals rather than for battles. Bowhunters or people who hunt with bow and arrow prefer using broadhead arrows to anything else because of they are able to kill animals instantly if they find the right mark. Additionally, wounded animals who have managed to flee can be tracked by the trail of blood coming from their lacerated flesh. Today's broadheads for bowhunting are much better made than the ones used in the middle ages. Therefor it can kill an animal instantly instead of just wounding it. The shaft of the arrow usually held the broadhead fast.
The traditional triangle shape is retained in today's broadheads for bowhunting. However, they are no longer made of steel but usually of some high grade metal alloy that is light enough to travel fast and hard enough to penetrate deep into the animal's body.
The newer designs of today's broadheads for bowhunting may have blades on four sides instead of the traditional two. This increases the chances of disabling the animal from flight if not killing it outright. The prey stands to experience less pain in the process.
The traditional broadheads were solid and were held fast by the shaft. Today's broadheads for bowhunting may have the blades tucked inside a cylinder-shaped arrowhead. They remain inside the arrow until it hits a target, at which moment they are snap out of the arrow. These are called mechanical broadheads. They travel faster than the fixed type of broadhead and are more accurate.
The reason for that is that those which are fixed in shape may sometimes be deviated from their target by strong gusts of wind. They sometimes miss hitting the target in the right position or fail to make contact altogether.
Basing the concept on that of replaceable shaving blades, manufacturers have invented replaceable blades for broadheads. It becomes possible to have a brand new broadhead without having to buy an entire new unit.
