The McDonald's vs Burger King battle features the worlds two biggest players in the fast food hamburger industry

. As far as overall sales, number of restaurants and market presence, there really is not much of a debate as to which chain is the leader. McDonald's clearly sells more hamburgers than Burger King does, but does that necessarily mean they produce a better product? We are here to take a look at the McDonald's vs Burger King question from a number of different angles, from marketing strategies to how good their food tastes. The numbers overwhelmingly favor McDonald's over Burger King in terms of sales and number of locations both in the United States and around the world. McDonald's continues to dominate both the hamburger market and the fast food industry in general. Looking at sales, Burger King comes in a fairly distant second in the hamburger sector, with a slim lead on third place Wendy's. In the broader fast food category Burger King is third behind Subway.

According to their corporate websites, McDonald's currently has over 33,000 restaurants in 119 countries around the world, and they serve 64 million customers on a daily basis. Burger King, on the other hand, has approximately 12,200 locations in 73 countries, serving over 11 million guests every day. In the United States McDonald's also holds the upper hand with approximately 12,800 restaurant locations compared to just over 8,000 for Burger King. So it is clear who is winning the McDonald's vs Burger King show down as far as number of restaurants and global presence.

Business success is determined by revenue and McDonald's dominates the fast food industry in this category, particularly the hamburger niche. Looking at 2010 numbers, McDonald's reported revenues in excess of $24 Billion and a net income of just under $5 Billion, compared to revenues of roughly $2.5 Billion and a net income of almost $187 Million for Burger King.


McDonald's employs approximately 400,000 people in the U.S. versus nearly 40,000 for Burger King.

The types of food that both McDonald's and Burger King serve are generally very similar, a typical meal being some variation of a burger, fries and a drink. They both offer a number of varieties of burgers, chicken sandwiches, fish and other types of sandwiches and wraps, fries, chicken nuggets and other side items, a variety of breakfast choices, salads, desserts, coffee, milkshakes and kid's menus. There is not a huge difference between the types of food you can get at either restaurant.

Both restaurants have their famous sandwiches for which they are well known for. When you think Burger King, the Whopper usually comes to mind. McDonald's flagship burger is the Big Mac, but also have other foods that have grown famous over time such as the Quarter Pounder and Filet-o-Fish. However, beyond these main burger choices, the McDonald's vs Burger King playing field has grown to include a much broader variety of food.

Both restaurants offer different varieties burgers, plus other menu items designed to please any taste. Both Burger King and McDonald's have menus that are fairly consistent no matter where you go. They aim to deliver the same tasting food anywhere it is served. Although their burgers will take similar virtually anywhere in the world, both companies will have some menu variations in different countries and cultures. For example, there is typically certain differences in menu choices in the U.S. as compared to in Europe, Asia, or other markets.


The McDonald's vs Burger King combatants are also constantly evolving their menus to adjust to the demands of their customers. Although the main staples of their menus have remained consistent throughout the years, other choices have been added and removed due to trends, popularity and growing demand for more healthy selections. There are also changes periodically for seasonal items and special promotions.

There is really no debate as to who is winning the McDonald's vs Burger King battle as far as market share, global presence and revenues. But the question of who makes the better burger and which restaurant delivers better tasting food is a little more subjective. McDonald's sells more burgers, but does that mean they taste better? Does their market domination have to do with a better product, or more effective marketing, or something else?

Has McDonald's grown into the giant of the fast food industry because they have a superior product, or is it due their successful marketing and expansion strategies? The question is, based purely on taste, would you rather eat a flame broiled Burger King Whopper or a fried McDonald's Quarter Pounder? A lot of people say they would take a BK burger with McDonald's fries for the best tasting meal. What about breakfast? McDonalds sales are roughly ten times those of Burger King, but we find it hard to believe that their product is ten times better, or that that many people prefer it simply based on quality.
