. There is an old yarn called "Acres of Diamonds" that underscores how easy it is to miss readily accessible riches that at times lie concealed literally beneath our feet. The tale is told of one Ali Hafed, a prosperous but discontented landowner in the Indus Valley.
An old Hindu priest tempted Ali Hafed into getting rid of his farm and using the proceeds to finance a worldwide hunt for the wealth he would make in diamonds. The lust for buried treasure and elusive riches spurred him on a worldwide quest which left him at last penniless. At long last, having depleted his funds he committed suicide in an orgy of grief and despair.
Acres of Diamonds
One day the old priest called upon Ali Hafed's former farm to visit the new owner and noticed a beautiful, rough-hewn stone displayed on the mantelpiece. Identifying it as a diamond in the rough, he asked hopefully if Ali Hafed had returned victorious from his quest. No, said the new owner, that is just a fascinating rock specimen that I came upon out in the yard. At that moment he realized the awful fate of Ali Hafed.
Pastor Russell Conwell used the story of buried treasure to convey the idea that we should "dig in our own back yard:" "Had Ali Hafed remained at home and dug in his own cellar, or underneath his own wheat fields or in his own garden, instead of wretchedness, starvation, and death by suicide in a strange land, he would have had 'acres of diamonds.' For every acre of that old farm, yes, every shovelful, afterward revealed gems which since have decorated the crowns of monarchs." Like so many, Ali Hafed did not value what he had when he had it.
Tragically there is an American counterpart to Ali Hafed. We don't have his name, but we do know he was the first owner of what was known as Sutter's Mill at the time of the California gold rush. This man sold the land to Sutter with the goal of seeking for gold down south. Sutter's gold strike came ironically at the hand of his young daughter who was playing with some sand before the family fireplace one night. Sutter observed the glitter of gold in the falling sand and the rest is history.
Thirty-eight million dollars of gold was eventually taken from Sutter's Mill. The man who sold the farm in quest of gold could have had everything he wanted for the simple taking had he only opened his eyes and started panning for gold. Again, the buried treasure lay just beneath his feet.
Lead Into Gold
So what's the point? The point is you learning how to transfigure real estate lead into real estate gold. Often it's not as difficult than you might imagine. You just have to perceive things from a fresh angle. Adopt a slightly different perspective.
