At the museums main exhibits, the artefacts that were dug up at Te Wairoa are on display, telling the silent story of the inhabitants that lost their lives and livelihoods in that fateful night. Household utensils, clothings items and other objects owned by the villagers are caked and preserved in volcanic mud, giving them a ghostly pale hue that is a fitting testament to the fate of The Buried Village. You can also walk among the once-beautiful excavated terraces where the remains of the old houses still stand, catching a glimpse to a past before cataclysm struck.
