The Cancer Within the Army- The case of Major Nidal
The Cancer Within the Army- The case of Major Nidal
Major Nidal Hasan will go down in the history books as a terrorist who opened indiscriminate fire on his compatriots who were near a theater and a processing center at Fort Hood, Texas. While firing from his rifle he is reported to have shouted "Allah u Akbar!"-God is Great- in Arabic. This is indeed disturbing news as it points to a failure of the higher command and supervisory staff in detecting what now seems his indoctrination as an Islamic terrorist.
Major Hasan was an Army Psychiatrist at the Walter Reed Hospital from where he was transferred to Fort Hood. It is really a wonder that the authorities made no attempt to counsel this man or prosecute him for sedition. For now it is learnt that this man would browbeat soldiers returning from the war and given to his care with Islamic rhetoric that they were wrong to kill Muslims. Muslim soldiers in particular were enjoined to revolt as what they had done was against the tenets of Islam and in all likely for their acts they would go to hell.
These were enough grounds for a court of inquiry and summary of evidence followed by a court martial. But the authorities failed miserably in doing what is essential. Did they even observe that this man had his visiting card that stated that he was a soldier of Allah?
The senior officers at Walter Reed hospital are thus equally guilty for the death of the 13 servicemen. It is a matter of sadness that inaction by the powers that be allowed this man to wreak mayhem and kill 13 soldiers and injure another 30.No army can afford this sort of causalities. The effect on morale can be devastating.
In addition it is again a matter of sadness that the man was carrying out an email correspondence with radical Imam al-Awlaki. There were between 10 and 20 emails speaking of his desire for martyrdom. In addition he hoped to meet al-Awlaki in Heaven and drink a toast of non-alcoholic wine with him.
It appears that some officials in the government were also aware of his contact with the radical Islam Imam in Yemen. How come there was no follow up? It is a shame that 13 soldiers lost their lives just because their seniors did not take Major Nidal seriously. It must be remembered that no army can win a war if cancerous people like Major Nidal are allowed to flourish.
The United States Army has a checkered record with a record of sustained fighting against the Japs ans reds. But in the present war on terror fueled by Islamic militants with a perverted sence of justice the stakes are pretty high. There is a need for a complete revampof the entire internal surveillance system . The US army cannot afford another incident like the one at Fort Hood
