The Captial City Bangkok

Bangkok is the capital city of Thailand, the country that often is called Siam

. It is on the Menam River, north of the Gulf of Siam. About 1,500 years ago, this area was under water. Silt, or soil left by the river, raised the bottom of the gulf and made dry land. In another 1,500 years, Bangkok may be a distant inland town! Bangkok is a colorful city of canals and islands. If you were to visit Bangkok you would see the king's palace, with a 2-foot statue of Buddha carved from a single piece of the gem called jasper.

You would also see a "floating town," hundreds of houses moored in the river and canals. Most of Bangkok's businessmen are Chinese and Europeans, who outnumber the Thailanders. Great quantities of rice are grown in the area around Bangkok. Much of this rice is shipped from Bangkok to people in many other places in the Far East. Other exports are rubber, tin, teak wood, and tungsten. Bangkok is known for its sparkling temples, called mats, which often have several roofs, one over the other, with long, graceful, curved rafters at the corners.

In the chapels are images of BUDDHA, about whom you may read in another article. Loi Krathong is one of Bangkok's fascinating festivals. It happens on the fullmoon night of October. On that night, tiny boats made of banana leaves and filled with flowers and lighted candles are set adrift. They twinkle across the dark river and canals like fireflies. The festival is held to give thanks to the spirits of the waters, for providing the monsoon rains so that the people can grow their rice. It is the same kind of celebration as Thanksgiving Day in the United States
