The Certosa di Firenze is a former monastery of the Certosini Order, which stands on Monte Acuto, at the confluence of Ema with Greve near Galluzzo, surrounded by high walls. It was built from 1341 by Nicholas Acciaiuoli, Grand siniscalco of the Kingdom of Naples and a member of one of the most illustrious Florentine families, and at his death (1365), the building was almost completed. The Certosa was later enlarged and enriched by numerous

donations over the centuries. The name and type of building derived from the first house, the Grande Chartreuse of the Order of Certosini and built in 1084 by St. Bruno on the Massif de la Chartreuse, near Grenoble, and like all monasteries, it is located far from the city, a place Originally solitary and silent.

The Charterhouse is composed of several buildings: church, chapter house, sacristy, refectory, cloisters, offices and residences for the monks and lay brothers. Was designed to accommodate up to 18 monks cloistered brothers and five converts, as you can see from the number of homes located throughout the structure. The cloistered monks possessed a cell rather large, as there had to spend almost all their lives in meditation.
