Whitby, North Yorkshire, a coastal town situated on the north-east coastline nestling

between Cleveland and Lincolnshire, has a varied and interesting history with an even more exciting present and potential great future as a holiday resort.

Due to its location, it is particularly popular with visitors from the immediate area such as Cleveland, Northumberland and the East and West Ridings of Yorkshire. In the last twenty to thirty years, however, the areas for potential visitors has increased to encompass England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and, in fact, the rest of the world.

With the ever increasing popularity of the town, the number of providers of accommodation has increased.One sector in particular, the hotels, has realised the potential income with the advent of various breaks and weekend away stays alongside the traditional annual holiday period. More and more special events' are added to the yearly calendar making a steady increase in the numbers of people requiring accommodation at various times of the year.

Christmas and the New Year has seen numbers increasing and the hotels and restaurants have risen to the demands at that time.Differing events throughout the year and the Gothic Weekends which take place in approximately April and October each year, have seen accommodation across the board full to capacity.

Many of the larger buildings of the George Hudson era on the Royal Crescent and West Cliff area' have been converted to hotels and due to their size have the capacity to adapt to the now essential en-suite accommodation. In the Victorian days and those early decades of the 1990s, the bathroom facilities consisted of a washbowl and jug in the bedrooms with a small number of water closets shared between many bedrooms. In the not too distant past, probably towards the end of the last century, washbasins in the rooms and the sharing of a number of toilets and bathrooms in each establishment were the norm. The twenty-first century, however, has seen the boundaries pushed even higher with full en-suite facilities a basic essential.

The standard of accommodation in hotels has also risen with the more discerning visitor demanding a high level of dcor, services and menus. An increase has been visible in the number of various types of hotels offering 'themed accommodation'. A rise in four poster beds, rooms encompassing the Victorian style, Gothic style, Scottish style, boudoir style and ultra modern have offered the potential visitor a plethora of accommodation to be viewed on the internet or by the brochures offered by the Tourist Accommodation Board.

The English Tourist Board have certain criteria and standards across the board for the whole of England and this is reflected in the number of stars credited to each particular establishment. The higher the number of stars awarded to each particular establishment, the higher the level of services and accommodation provided.

Not all of the hotels are situated on the West Cliff or in that vicinity. A few are situated in and around the town centre and a few are just slightly out of town but still easily accessible. These include one or two rather grand' establishments dating from a couple of centuries ago and, indeed, there is a proposed rather exclusive hotel not too far away that will probably be beyond the reach of many visitors to the area. Extravagant perhaps, for the average visitor but essential to give a wide variety of choice.

Whitby can boast that in relation to its size it is well able to offer a full range of accommodation and hotel choice available to welcome visitors into the twenty-first century.
