Platform as a service is the most sought service by developers.

Platform as a service, as the name suggests, is a service provided by ISVs (Internet Service Vendors) on the cloud that offer app development infrastructures including hardware, operating systems, network and storage capacity on the cloud on rent basis and frees developers from bothering about infrastructure installations and configuration. App developers create the apps using tools and APIs provided by the provider and also control the deployment and configuration settings of the apps. This not only reduces the cost pressure on developers, but also supports them in building simple to complex cloud apps efficiently without worrying about the execution platform. Developers have to simply register with these cloud vendors, choose the desired platform for developing and running their cloud apps. PaaS also is a cost effective solution as developers only pay for what and how much they use.

PaaS enables app developers to simplify the development process by providing pre-developed business frameworks and prevent them to start development from the scratch and supports them to skip the initial development stage to start the project. Risk associated with cloud apps is also minimized as developers need not make huge infrastructure investments rather they can deploy their apps as many times as desired without making any changes. Also, software upgrades and system maintenance is handled by the PaaS provider. Platform as a service (PaaS) allows many concurrent users to use the apps with its concurrency management, scalability and security features. Using PaaS, various other web services and databases provided by the ISVs can also be integrated with cloud apps. The most advantageous feature of Platform as a Service is that the developer is empowered to create their dream apps on the fly with full control over the app codes, testing, version and track any changes made by anyone to the app.

Platform as a Service is provided by few vendors as of now. Microsoft is the ancient PaaS provider since decades. Other popular PaaS providers are: Engine Yard, Google App Engine, Heroku, Mendix, OpenShift, Windows Azure etc. PaaS is dramatically changing the way to develop cloud apps and soon we will see an entirely new generation of apps with unique features since developers only need to focus on their development expertise and leave the complex infrastructure management to the PaaS providers.
