The few women who dared to break this ancient code of conduct were looked down upon by the society and often their own families would refuse to do anything with them. However, today it is quite normal for Chinese girls in big cities like Shanghai and Beijing to seek better education even at the risk of crossing the right marriageable age by several years. In fact, the topmost priority of most females who have completed their university studies is to find a well paying job with a top MNC. This helps them to not only achieve financial independence but also improve their future prospects as a career woman.

Most young and educated Chinese girls also feel that having a successful career would enable them to not only provide financial support to their aging parents but also provide them with a better choice of prospective life mates. Irrespective of the fact that only an extremely small percentage of Chinese men actually provide the necessary help and support to their working wives, modern Chinese females are rarely disheartened. In fact most of them are willing to cope with the stress of managing their household responsibilities as a wife and mother along with pursuing a career that enables them to fulfill their dreams and ambitions.
