When it comes to the glamour quotient, there are a few jobs which immediately come to mind

. Among these are catwalk model, actor/actress, fashion designer and anything related to celebrities. One of the jobs which also come to mind in this category is the job of the air hostess. Air hostess jobs have always been regarded as being glamorous and filled with fun and excitement.

The reality, however, is very different. Yes an air hostess job can be glamorous some of the time but the thing that people forget is that it is a job and such; it requires a lot of hard work and commitment if you wish to make a success of it. I know of a couple of girls doing air hostess jobs, UK, and they often tell me about the long hours of standing in high heels and of the disturbances which some passengers cause.

There was a time when an air hostess was treated with respect and was considered to be a valuable part of the airline crew. She was expected to behave in a certain way and to always do her duty with politeness and a smile. While the rules have not changed as to the duties and responsibilities of the air hostess, the way that she is treated has changed over time.

Working in the skies has changed. In the early days of aviation, an air hostess job was considered prestigious and pay was good. Young women saw the world, flew to exotic places where they could spend a few days at expensive hotels. They showed the passengers to their seats and helped them with their baggage. Everything was calmer and there was time for rest or a cup of coffee in the kitchen. Today the job is more stressful and women working in air hostess jobs can have three or four flights a day, with only little more than half an hour for the turnaround.

Rising oil prices, commercial pressure, heightened security and budget cuts mean the whole reason for pushing trolleys through different time zones at 35,000 feet namely, actually seeing the world has gone. A trip to Venice, say, is followed almost immediately by the trip home again. The hours are long and the work is tiring, not to mention the toll that is taken on your personal life due to erratic schedules and sleep patterns.

But still air hostesses must look a certain way. If your hair is longer than your collar you have to wear it up, and if your ponytail is longer than six inches you have to wear it in a French pleat. You always have to wear high heels and look well groomed. Even though there are male air stewards who serve drinks and see to the needs of the passengers, the air hostess jobs are the ones which are known as being glamorous. They are the main point of contact with the passengers, there to help you and may one day save your life.
