The Changing Face Of Electric Cars In The Uk

More and more car manufacturers are now choosing to enter the electric car market

. Renault is launching two electric cars this year. The Fluence, which will be priced from 17,500 is now in showrooms across the UK, and the Zoe, which is launched in the Autumn, will be available for less than 14,000. Renault is able to offer such low prices for the new models through a new method of ownership. Drivers buy the car but will rent the battery, and depending on the average mileage, the rental cost will be around 1000 per year. While this may seem like an inconvenience, it will actually help to give drivers peace of mind, as the battery will be guaranteed for life, and there will be no concerns about batteries deteriorating over time. The Fluence will have a range of up to 125 miles and will need eight hours to charge the battery. It will suit some drivers, but not all. The Zoe, however, will accept fast-charging, where the car is charged up to 80% in half an hour.

The Vauxhall Ampera is another of the latest electric cars to reach to the UK, and unlike other electric cars, the Ampera is a real head-turner. Previous electric cars have had the reputation of looking rather uncool, but the arrival of the stylish Ampera is a sign that design is becoming an increasingly important factor for electrics. In addition, electric ranges are extending, charge times are decreasing dramatically, and prices are being slashed, all in the space of a year and a half. For example, the Nissan Leaf, which is Britains best known electric car, is currently priced at just under 26,000 once the 5,000 Government Low Emissions grant has been taken off. Hopefully these advancements made by the industry will boost customer demand for electric cars. In 2011, only 1,000 electric cars were sold, in spite of the Governments considerable incentive.

The Ampera has been released as the Chevrolet Volt in the US, where it has had disappointing sales due to technical issues, but sales of 2,000 in 2012 are predicted by Vauxhall. Kent, London and Essex Vauxhall dealers will be hoping to get their share of Ampera sales when it is launched. Vauxhall has set an even more ambitious target of 5,000 sales in 2013, and will mostly be aiming at the corporate market. The Ampera boasts a total range of up to 350 miles, once the range-extending generator has activated. The battery alone will offer between 20 and 50 miles. Prices will be high, however, the Ampera will be priced at 29,950 for the basic version after the Government grant deduction.
