The Changing Face Of Furniture Manufacturing

Imports of flat packed furniture has hit a a large part of the furniture industry in the UK

. The flat pack product has certainly hit the lower budget end, now fully assembled items are especially in oak are taking a strong foothold in the UK market. The traditions of furniture making are strong throughout the British Isles. In certain areas it has been the main employer, and the passing on of skills, has been something for each generation to give to each other.

Technology has changed the way we view business and as a result the world has become a much smaller place. The advancements in air travel, internet and conference calls has made it possible for UK businesses to deal with far off countries such as China and factory inspections can be carried out when in the past this would have been impossible.

The rest of the world has got its act together, infrastructure to once third world countries, has greatly improved, roads, airports have been greatly improved. The factories of China , Brazil, India and all the Far Eastern countries, have been built to gradually higher standards, and the investment in machinery has been immense. Furniture can now be made using computer operated machinery.

At the moment these far eastern countries are able to pay their workers a very minimal wage far less then in Europe or the the USA and for the time being this enables them to offer the lowest prices on the market however with the advancements of technology comes the accessibility of knowledge and it will not be long before the workers on these very low wages will want what western consumers want and the money to purchase these items.

Europe does have some advantages over the far eastern countries primarily that the pine for pine furniture comes from well managed forests where consumers do not have to worry about the impact their furniture has made on the world.

Pine furniture such as pine wardrobes and farmhouse tables are always of better quality then their imported counterparts primarily as these items need very good quality wood and as always Europe produces exceptional craftsmen these two factors combined means that traditional furniture making will not die out

and will always be a strong market factor.
