The Cheapest Broadband: How To Get It And Keep It

When it comes to the cheapest broadband there are two schools of though: one says

you get what you pay for and the other says you get the same whatever you pay so you might as well get the cheapest broadband possible.

The people that subscribe to the first point of view tend to want fairly high quality broadband - the tech bods, streaming-addicts or gamers who want a service they can use all day, everyday and for a variety of uses. Those that subscribe to the second tend to just want a basic service for occasional use evenings and weekends.

That divide means that they tend to both be right. There's nothing worse than overpaying and in my job I often speak to people so worried about getting the right broadband that they get far more than they need.

My advice is that if basic broadband is what you're after follow the market and find the cheapest broadband deals before you do anything else.

The examples here are from the UK market because that is my area of expertise but the basic principles are equally applicable to consumers in America, Canada, India or really pretty much anywhere with a thriving (or semi-thriving) broadband marketplace.

So, how to follow the market? Well, there are four steps.

Step one. Broadband is exchange depend so you need to find what's available in your property using a postcode and/or home telephone number comparison table.

You can find these on high quality broadband comparison websites and some even have specific tables listing the cheapest broadband deals once you've entered your details you'll see the range of deals available.

Step two. Be prepared to change your home phone service.

Unless you're dead set against changing your line rental provider you'll get the cheapest broadband deal by switching the service so don't be scared of the change - in most cases you won't notice any change in service and if you rarely use your home phone you've got nothing to lose.

You might even find that you'll have other costs - such as set up fees - reduced or waived when you sign up for home phone as well as broadband.

Step three. Estimate your usage, it's crucial to getting the cheapest broadband - unlimited doesn't come cheap these days.

There are generally usage calculators which you can use and remember that it's best to underestimate and have to move up a package than overestimate and be overpaying forever.

However, there are some deals which offer a compromise. For example, Plusnet Value broadband has a usage allowance for most of the time but is completely unlimited

Step four. The last step is about keeping the cheapest broadband. Every time your contract is coming to an end repeat stages 1-3 - the cheapest broadband will never be a fixed point, no matter what your provider tries to tell you.
