The Chimps That Live In Captivity Are Leading Miserable Lives
It is quite obvious from the results of popular TV ratings that more people spend time sitting in front of their televisions
. With more quality programs being produced and shows being aired round the clock, the viewership is increasing steadily. Technology also is playing an important part with the quality of the picture getting enhanced due to various technical advancements like fiber optic networks being adopted that result in the quality of the content that is ultimately delivered to doorsteps. With crystal clear picture and amazing surround sound that makes one feel like being in a theater, the need to take the trouble of going over to a theater to watch a movie is slowing reducing with people opting to watch movies and shows from the comforts of their homes.
Preferences are varied with a small percentage tuning into the latest news first thing after switching on their televisions. An obsession to keep updated with what is happening worldwide and to also keep up with the latest in economy, stock prices, commodity prices and a million other things is what turns on such people. It is quite amazing how fast news travels from corner of the world to another. The devastating effects of a Tsunami in the East is filmed and brought to every home with graphic details and so too a volcano erupting and viciously spewing molten lava for days on end. The reports on the daily vagaries of the weather which are quite unpredictable are what some people are keen to know about.
A slightly larger percentage of people are so crazy about sports that it is unthinkable for them to miss a favorite baseball or basketball game. With most of the channels airing programs in HD even the finest details like sweat trickling down the faces of players in action makes the viewers feel that they are actually closer to the players than they would be if at the actual venue. Even if they were to miss a particular show for any reason, they catch up during the highlights. Of course there are the devices called DVRs which allow people to record shows to view whenever they please. These technically brilliant pieces of equipment even allow people to program in advance so that the shows get recorded automatically even if they were to get held up on some chores or somewhere outside their homes.
With more service providers entering the fray and almost all of them providing somewhat similar services, the competition is stiff with the result the viewers get to benefit from the various deals that are offered by each provider. There are TV deals that offer interesting combinations of channels. Like a mixture of comedy, sports, movies and science and technology. People are now at liberty to choose whatever suits them best and not be bogged down with channels that they may never view yet end up paying for. However, people need to read the fine print to check if they are getting into any contract and even if there is no contract, one needs to be absolutely certain about the validity of the prices at least for a minimum period of time.
Technological advances have made it possible for entertainment to go mobile. People are now able to carry around their televisions in their pockets. In other words they can access their favorite programs either through an iPad, a Smartphone, etc even while they are on the move. They need to download a special app for this purpose. Most service providers provide this app free of cost or at a very negligible price. With what is called home entertainment being available even outside the hAlmost all of us love rearing pets and it is most common to find households having their pet dogs or cats. Some even like rearing horses as pets. All this is understandable and is not considered out of the way as these animals have been domesticated and make excellent pets. However, of late some people are acquiring an obsession to rear pets that are not so ordinary. One such obsession is to rear chimpanzees. The main reason cited is that these creatures are simply adorable when they are young and they are the closest to humans with a 99% genetic similarity. Chimps are reared as pets with the fond hope that man will one day be able to connect to the missing link. People also believe that a chimp can be trained to be almost human and has been taught how to communicate with humans using something resembling human sign language.
Today, chimpanzees are bred in captivity and the young ones are quickly weaned away from their mothers even while they are mere babies. This is done with the hope that if a chimp is reared from birth without knowing its mother, it may show traits more common to humans than chimps. With a lot of research in chimp behavior being undertaken these poor animals are being subjected to unimaginable cruelty and suffering. Though the intention is not to cause harm the end result is one of deprivation and despair. The creatures are often isolated and grow up in strange surroundings and develop violent tempers and are very aggressive. Some become too dangerous to be in the midst of humans and end up attacking humans and causing severe injuries by biting and clawing.
Most of the chimps that are reared as pets are ultimately sold to trainers who take them through a harsh training schedule where they learn to understand and obey simple commands. However, the reason why they are sold is not for money and more because they become too violent to be handled by untrained people. By this time the damage is done and the animals start behaving very aggressively and harsh methods need to be adopted to keep them in control. A chimpanzee that grows in the wild has close contact with its mother till it is 2 years old. The relationship with the family continues till the baby grows up and is about 8 years old. Interacting with other members of its species is very important for a chimp and so is its diet. However all this is denied to it while it is reared in captivity.
We do not know if all this is a cause for the chimpanzee becoming an endangered species. However, the fact is that it is on the list of endangered species and if the exploitation continues in the name of research and other such excuses, the future generations will only read about and examine the skeletons and remains of chimpanzees. What is meant to be in the wild needs to be allowed to be where it belongs. Can we imagine and a human baby being brought up by a bunch of chimpanzees and taught to climb trees and fend for itself feeding on vegetation. Would not such a gross thing appall us and create a sense of hurt and rage? Then what right do we have to control the life of any animal simply because it has striking similarities? The only way out is through spreading awareness and appropriate legislation if required. The time to act is now or else it will be too late. To get more firsthand information you could try watching Chimps in captivity that is aired on popular channels including Comcast.
