The City Of Dubai

As early as 16th century C.E., Dubai has been referred in Western History as a city known for its pearl industry

. By the late 18th century C.E., the town of Dubai was an established pearl and fishing community. At the beginning of the 19th century under British protectorate, Dubai became an important trading post as its location is central to key towns and cities in the Middle East. By the early 20th century the population of Dubai was close to 20,000.

World War I brought havoc to Dubais pearl industry. The depression of the 1930s also contributed to Dubais arrested economic development. However, in the 1960s, a complete turnabout happened when oil was discovered in the region. The 1970s brought about a change in Dubais status when the British finally released their hold of the city. Hence, Dubai became one of the emirates of the United Arab Emirates of Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fajairah.

Oil was Dubais liquid gold. The oil venture success of neighboring emirates of Dubai (and the rest of the Middle East) brought forth rapid progress of the region bringing untold and unthinkable wealth to the city in particular and UAE in general. The oil crisis caused by the Persian Gulf War in early 1990s boosted the price of oil that the government of Dubai became even richer. In 1993, the emirate of Dubai started to lay out the foundation of a super city. Roads were widened and more highways built. By 1999, a completely different Dubai was emerging and a few years later, Dubai has become a city of superlatives. Real estate, tourism and finance became Dubais bread and butter.

Today Dubai is more of an independent city-state. It has developed at an unbelievable pace both in the trade and tourism industries. Until the global economic crash of 2009, Dubai was fast becoming a tourists Mecca. What is highest, fastest, tallest and biggest is found in Dubai.

The tallest building in the world is now the Burj Khakifa at over 800 meters tall. It has 126 floors and houses nine hotels. One can visit the observation deck at the 124th floor for a fee.

The first and probably the only (self)-proclaimed 7-star hotel in the world is the Burj-al Arab Hotel. It is also the second tallest hotel building in the world. The hotel is iconic of an Arab boat sail, a design based on the owners wish. The hotels construction started in 1994 and what made this hotel extra special is the fact that it stands on an artificial island about 280 from the shore. Its access is through a private bridge.

The Palm Islands, a group of 3 artificial islands, is major real estate development. Only one island, the Palm Jumeirah has been opened. What makes this real estate unique is the fact that Palm Jumeirah is actually shaped like a palm tree the leaves as the landform and the trunk the connecting landform to Dubai.
