The City Of Pamplona

Pamplona is the capital of Navarre in Spain and this city is best known for the Fiesta

de San Fermin which takes place during the period of 6th-14th July every year. It is within this period that the exciting event known as the Running of the Bulls (encierro) occurs; visitors come from far and wide to partake or witness this astonishing feat.

The Running of the Bulls

This event takes place in a number of cities and villages in Spain; however the main attraction is in Pamplona. Every morning at 8:00 a.m. six (6) bulls are allowed to run in a specific, sectioned off route while participants in the Bull Run can be seen running ahead of the bulls as a display of their bravery. The barricades built to section the area do however allow for a quick escape by an individual if and when necessary. The run is televised and balconies are booked to ensure a perfect view of the event.

The objective of the run is to get the bulls from the corrals to the bullring (Plaza de Toros) for the bullfight to be held in the afternoon at the end of which the bulls are killed. The entire run takes about four minutes and covers approximately 825 metres. The Running of the Bulls in Pamplona has been the tradition since 1910 and although injuries do occur and fifteen (15) deaths have been recorded from inception to present, the event continues to attract thousands every year.

Other Highlights in Pamplona

While the Bull Run may be the main event during the period, it is by far not the only attraction to be seen in Pamplona during this time of festivities. Many people take this opportunity to visit other popular or important locations in Pamplona. The Gothic Cathedral, admired for its neoclassical facade and its remarkable cloister is usually number one on a sightseers list. The churches Santo Domingo, San Cenin and San Nicholas each originally belonged to different towns (Burgos), which were always at war. These three (3) churches have been maintained even after the king united the towns in the year 1423. The Citadel which dates back to the 16th century and contains some of the most beautiful gardens is currently used for concerts and exhibitions. The Town Hall which is located at the Plaza de los Burgos is a display of Baroque architecture.

Mentioned above are just a few of the places to be visited whilst vacationing in Pamplona. Many people visit for the Running of the Bulls and leave with a lot more history, knowledge and pictures than they were expecting to acquire in Pamplona.
