The club head
Modern science and even the space programmed have contributed greatly to the variety of materials now used in club heads-the only part of the club that comes into contact with the ball-and the way they are built. Once only made of wood, cast iron or steel, clubhead design and construction is now a highly sophisticated art, and one from which your game can greatly benefit.
Irons have either blade or peripherally weighted heads. The traditional bladed head is still often seen in the bag of the tour professional-check out what your favorite pro uses the next time you watch a tournament on television-or the low handicap player who can hit most of his or her shots in the centre of the clubface.
But increasingly, the more modern peripherally weighted golf club which came into general use about 20 years ago and which has an oversized club head with a cavity back is replacing the bladed club. Originally designed to help beginners and golfers who do not possess a consistent swing and who are thus more liable to miss hit shots, peripherally weighted clubs now find favor with such top players.
Increased sweet spot
With the weight distributed around the outside of the head, these clubs are more forgiving, much like larger tennis rackets which offer an increased sweet spot. Even when a shot is hit off, the result is often a fairly reasonable strike.
As for woods, the club head these days are made of anything but wood, featuring such materials as steel, graphite and titanium. Metal woods-rather than the traditional wooden ones that dominated the game for decades-are now used by players at every level.
The club heads are hollow and peripherally weighted, making them easier to hit and easier to maintain.Plus, they wear well.
As to the swingweighted of the clubhead, that is an individual choice.A golfer should try out as large a variety of swing weights as possible to determine which ones suits him or her best. This is one area where there are no hard and fast rules.
Dynamic lie
Lie angled is determined by the angle at which the shaft enter the headland should be set by the manufacturer to suit a golfer's height, stature and arm length but the only way really to determine the correct lie angle is by hitting shots. Merely holding club to the ground, or taking up your address position with a club in ashop, will tell you almost nothing relevant about lie angle.
A number of factors have a direct bearing on the way the club returns to the ball at impact, so lie angle is an area where having clubs correctly fitted to you can make all the difference to your game. The wrong lie angle can lead to shots hit either left or right of the target, depending on whether the lie angle is too flat or too upright.
Determining lie angle
To determine the correct lie angle for you, ask you're pro to provide a number of clubs with different lie angles. The pro can then put some tape on the bottom of the clubs and let you hit shots off a hard board. The way the tape is rubbed off as you hit the ball will help him determine the right lie angle for you.
For example, if the tape gets down at the toe, that means the clubs is too flat for you, and the ball could well shoot off to the right.Conversely, if the tape is worn at the heel, the club is too upright for you, and you may hit everything left.
Ideally, you're looking for a lie angle where the tape is rubbed off the middle, indicating that the sole of the club is meeting the ground correctly at the moment of impact,That,s called dynamic lie.
If your clubs do not have the right laid angle, it will have an adverse effect on how you hit the ball. The more lofted the club is, the more pronounced is the effect. Even 2 degrees off on a pitching wedge can be disastrous. So ensuring that your clubs have the right lie angle is yet another vital ingredient to playing that dream round.
