. The cold process of soap making is very easy. Especially for beginners, they find this as an easy way to make handmade soaps. It is very important to have all the ingredients ready before starting. Materials that you may need include the lye, fats, oils, colorants, fragrances, herbs, cutters, molds and even your protective clothing. Having these ready will ensure that this activity will go on smoothly.

The first thing that you need to do is wear protective equipment as lye is a very dangerous substance. It can corrode the skin when it comes in contact with it, and it fumes can also cause damage to the lungs when inhaled. Wearing gloves, goggles and face masks are a must when handling lye.

Start soap making by adding lye to water with constant mixing. Never add water to lye since it can cause lye to spurt out of the container. The recommended ratio of lye to water is 1:3 and make sure that you follow this ratio. The lye and water mixture is expected to heat up so you need to make sure that you use a container that can withstand heat.

The next step is to add the oils in the liquid mixture. In the cold process, you always have to make sure that you have all the ingredients measures accurately. Less amount of oil will retain unreacted lye in the mixture. At the same time, with excess oil, the soap will not harden. Continually mixing should be done until saponification.

Upon the completion of the saponification process, it is time to add into the mixture the rest of the ingredients. These may be the fragrances, dyes and other additives which would enhance the properties of the soap that you are making.

Take the soap mixture and pour it in molds that you have ready. This will make your soaps look more beautiful since there are a lot of shapes that you can have for your soaps. Start readying your soap cutters and be creative with the appearance of your soaps.

You should strictly follow the curing time in the cold process of soap making. The molds must be covered for at least 18 hours using a towel. Once the soaps are hard enough to be handled you can now start cutting them. After this, you should leave the soaps to air-dry for 3 to 8 weeks before you can actually use them.
