The Colorful Side Of Pet Painting
Whenever she works at home, this graphic artist is haunted by a bunch of little faces
. A big chunk of her time is used for creating print ads, handling form designs, and other stuff that seem lifeless. Observing her through a screened door are four felines and four canines.
A new career entered her mind when she saw the faces. She decided to paint the animals' pictures on canvas while she was on her way to see her parents in Texas. Using colors that fit the animal's personality, she creates the animal's portrait.
She makes it her goal to capture the essence of the animal when she paints. Using color, I can recreate the animal's personality, but I must know it first. It was the painting of a mixed breed that she and her husband discovered in Mississippi that became her very first. The red dog stuck with them the whole time.
To illustrate the jealous side of her dog, she used green. She's not alone in creating animal portraits with nonconventional colors. A cajun artist made a portrait of his dead dog back in 1984 using blue paint, and it became an icon.
It's hard not to not see the blue dog. While people may find a certain playfulness in the blue dog paintings, there is actually a serious and darker side in how the artist views the paintings. The artist intended for each of the paintings to actually have a deep spiritual meaning even if the paintings looked funny. The dog, looking at us, makes us aware of questions that we have asked ourselves for ages.
She wants the art to be a reflection of the animal's essence. She picks vibrant colors, unusual patterns to mirror how they act. All her animals are rescued, adopted from a shelter or found on the street. The latest dog she adopted was going from one neighbor's house to another.
By placing colorful fliers in veterinarian offices, she marketed her pet portraits. She asks clients to give her an idea of the animal's personality and also a photograph. When she knows the animal already personally, then she'll know what colors to use. There is just something that these portraits give that satisfies customers, said the owner.
Her energetic personality was captured with they yellow paint. Portraits will be appreciated by people who know the subjects in the pictures, said a gallery owner. It's one thing to look at a portrait, even a pet portrait and appreciate it for its artistic quality.
