The Colosseum Rome And Affordable Rome Hotels
Right in the heart of central Rome, you will find the Colosseum (or Coliseum)
, one of the most impressive buildings of the Roman Empire and the largest of its era. This gigantic structure has deteriorated over the centuries but is still an imposing and impressive sight and of course a true must-see when visiting Rome.
It was originally called the Flavian Amphitheatre, as it was named after the emperor who initiated the building of the structure, namely Emperor Vespasian, who was the founder of the Flavian Dynasty. Construction began in 72AD and it was not completed until eight years later, and one year after the death of Vespasian.
The amphitheatre's current name comes from the fact that originally the site was home to Emperor Nero's great park which also encompassed the Domus Aurea and the Colossus statue. And it was form this statue of Nero that the Colosseum got its modern name.
The building is shaped elliptically and measures 188 metres by 156 metres. It is four storeys high and reaches a height of more than 48 metres. During its heyday, it was able to accommodate 55,000 spectators who entered the building through a choice of 80 entrances. There was also a massive awning (velarium) which protected the audience from the sun.
Originally the Colosseum's facade was covered in marble but throughout the years it has been removed and used in the construction of other iconic buildings, including St. Peter's Basilica. The south facing side unfortunately fell victim to a devastating earthquake around 847AD.
The Colosseum was primarily built to entertain the Roman public with games, which comprised of comical acts and exotic animal exhibitions, and finished with fights to the death between either animals and gladiators or gladiators against gladiators. The games were also used to increase the emperor's popularity and a were also a symbol of power.
As mentioned above, the Colosseum is located at the heart of the historical centre of Rome. A prime location to be based for exploring this amazing city on foot. Also next to the Colosseum are the ancient ruins of the Roman Forum, and slightly further afield you will find Piazza Venezia and the Basilica of St. Mary Major.
