that almost all of the worlds genuine amber is 30 to 90 million years old and the gemstone, which is more properly a resin, has been prized for many reasons by civilisations both ancient and modern.
In his famous work, the Odyssey, Homer mentions amber and it is also mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible in the book of Ezekiel, where it is used to demonstrate God's overbearingly bright and immediate presence, so that for the early Christians amber signified the presence of the Lord.
The ancient Egyptians placed a piece of amber in the casket of a loved one to ensure the body would forever remain whole. Even nowadays in the Far East amber is the symbol of courage and some Asian cultures regard amber as the 'soul of the tiger'.
Human beings are affected by and react to colours so it is perhaps no surprise that the golden yellow colour of amber should have come to have specific meanings and be thought to contain special properties.
Travellers would carry a piece of amber for protection and it was worn as an amulet to preserve chastity and to guard against evil. Sailors once believed that burning amber would keep them safe from sea monsters.
Early physicians prescribed amber for headaches, heart problems, arthritis and a variety of other ailments and used powdered amber mixed with honey as a curative for asthma, gout, and the black plague.
Its association with the third chakra makes it perfect for wearing in an amber pendant, where it can work on the solar plexus to evoke love, healing protection, power and luck. It is believed to promote a carefree, sunny disposition, good luck and success, and to dissolve opposition.
The color amber is associated with the ancient Persian religion of Zoroastrianism, said to be the first monotheistic faith and therefore an influence on Christianity, Judaism and Islam because of the eternally burning holy fire in fire temples, which is seen as a representation of the spiritual energy of God (Ahura Mazda). Zoroastrianism is still practiced by the Parsis in India and its diaspora today and its basic principles are good thoughts, good words and good deeds.
Amber marks the tenth wedding anniversary stone and generally regarded as the May-born Taurus birthstone though some say November because of its colour. However, Topaz, which can have a similar colour, is more widely associated with those born in November.
Shades range from a pinkish hue to a dark brown but the most usual colour found in amber pendants and other jewellery is a golden yellow.
In the graphics and advertising worlds colour theory would use the colour yellow (including coral, orange, amber, gold) to symbolize energy, caution, warmth, cheer and joy, making it a good choice for press kits and shopping bags but it is also used for danger warning signs. Hull City AFC, an English soccer tea, also wears the colour amber.
