The Consequences Of Being Tone Deaf-- How Amusia Can Affect Daily Life

If you watch television, it would be easy to believe that everyone sings very well

. If we thought art mimicked life, we'd think that people frequently break into song and the people around them sing along on key. In fact, the number of people who sing well is low.

Typically, when people are asked to sing in public, such as in church or at a sporting event to the National Anthem, a lot of us simply move our mouths as though we were singing, when in fact we're not emitting any sound at all.

Typically, we only sing loudly when we're completely alone, such as while showering or in our automobiles with the windows rolled up and the radio turned up. If you are among those who admit to being tone deaf, you are hardly alone. Approximately one out of every seven people believes he/she is tone deaf.

There is a misconception that tone deaf is simply an inability to sing, though most people who call themselves tone deaf are quite capable of hearing and enjoying the full scale of a song. A much smaller amount of people would be considered tone deaf if the term was used in it's truest sense by describing someone's difficulty perceiving music. Studies conducted using musical listening tests reveal that the higher percentage attributed to the tone deaf should really be reduced from one in seven to one in 20.

Folks who are actually tone deaf cannot discern disparity in pitch. They can't hear whether a pitch is low or high. Thus, they cannot follow even an easy melody or tune no matter how hard they work.

People who suffer from acute tone deafness are said to have amusia. Congenital amusia refers to those who are born with this condition. Montreal Battery for the Evaluation of Amusia is a series of tests that researchers created to comb through the different kinds of musical deficiencies.

Another helpful tool is the imaging scan of the brain that allows researchers to compare the brain activity of the tone deaf, the average person and the musical genius.

Researchers are curious about the workings of a brain and it's relation to music, which is why this research is performed. At this time, there is no research being conducted to discover a solution to problem of tone deafness. It is hoped that problems like learning and other developmental disabilities may someday be better understood by scientists able to use amusia research as a vital model.

In terms of the organizational structure of music, in the Western world we use half steps (also referred to as semitones) to classify the difference between musical notes. Able to differentiate among notes only divided by a tiny portion of a semitone, the majority of individuals do not have difficulties contrasting semitones. People who suffer from amusia, however, must hear extremely different notes if they are able to tell the difference between the two sounds.

If you have tone deafness, you will struggle with being able to separate one pitch from another. You also won't be able to make out pitch direction or contour. It is these subtle differences in tone and pitch that form a melody and provide the sounds of ups and downs in the overall pitch contour of a song.

Distinguishing changes in pitch within a musical phrase is an especially challenging task for those who have been classified as amusic.

Some who suffer from amusia report that they have a hard time with rhythm as well. However, if the music played is monotone with no variations in pitch, amusics display a good rythmic sense. A change in pitch from a regular piece of music that throws an amusics off could very well be the reason they lose their rhythm as well.
