The Correct Way to Measure Your Horse for a Horse Blanket

Your horse needs protection while outdoors

Your horse needs protection while outdoors. Nasty weather, bothersome insects, and intense sunlight can be detrimental to your horse's beauty and health. It needs a blanket and luckily, there are many different types of horse blankets to choose from. They each have their own assortment of uses, so therefore it is very important to find the right blanket and ensure your horse stays happy and healthy.

Do you know how to correctly size your horse blankets? If you do, it makes shopping for one so much easier. Here are a few tips on how to properly the right fit:

First, you'll want to stand your horse up squarely. You may need to get someone to help you with this either holding the horse or measuring it if it isn't as cooperative as you like. If no one is around to help you, tie the horse and try to get it to stand as square as possible.

Now, go to your horse's left side and place the end of the measuring tape where its neck meets the center of its chest. Next, draw the tape along the side as much as you can. Make sure to cross the widest part of its shoulder. Measuring too low will mean the blanket will too small around the chest. You want the tape level and taut too or you can unintentionally add a few extra inches, leaving you with a blanket that is too long lengthwise.

Reach as far as you can, and hold your thumb on that spot. Make a note of the measurement. After that, you are going to measure from your thumb across the point of its hindquarters; try to be about 10 or 12 inches below where the horse's tail meets the body. Make another note of this measurement at the edge of his tail.

To get the horse's correct blanket size add those two measurements. If you come out with an odd amount, you can simply round up to the next even number. Custom made blankets are sometimes able to use the exact measurement, however, I recommend using adding a few extra inches to make sure the blanket fits with a little room for movement.

Measuring your horse in this manner will give you a pretty good idea of the size and type of blanket to shop for. Keep in mind too that the measurements you calculated also work for other types of blankets such as fly sheets and coolers.
