The Cost Benefits Of Using Acrylic Glass Vs Traditional Glass.

Cost is something everyone has to deal with especially when it comes to homes

. By using acrylic windows you can save money not only the window itself but on heating costs. The cost of an acrylic sheet can be cheaper in comparison to the same size glass counterpart. One of the main reasons behind this is due to the fact that glass needs to be thicker and coated in special films in order to do the same job as a thinner acrylic sheet. Acrylic glass is less dense the density can range from 1150-1190 kg/m3. This is less than half the density of glass which ranges 2400 to 2800 kg/m3. This lack of density means it is often cheaper to transport to a jobsite. Savings are also passed on during installation because the manpower needed to handle acrylic sheets is less, while glass installation is time consuming and requires additional handles because of the weight increase.

Acrylic Glass is 3 to 8 times more thermally insulating than regular glass windows, as a result less heat (in the winter) and less air conditioning (in the summer) is needed due to acrylic material. Acrylics full name is Poly (Methyl Methacrylate) or PMMA for short is in simple terms a derivative of plastic which makes it less porous versus glass. Not only does it insulate better it can filter out 99.1% of Ultra Violet rays between 300 and 355 when passing through the acrylic sheet. While it filters out most of the harmful Ultra Violet rays it does not distort the visual spectrum of light allowing 92 percent of light through, thus making the use of the acrylic window an excellent addition to any existing application. Glass surfaces reflect light more readily than acrylic surfaces, and this can create unwanted glare or reflections.

In regards to sound control the STC rating improves from 18 to 28 when an acrylic sheet is added to a single window. The decibel reduction is around 19.2, that is an effective reduction of over 70%! Particularly effective in 1000 Hz range which are the lower frequencies commonly associated to vehicles driving by. This was determined by Riverbank Acoustical Laboratories, Illinois, in tests performed April 22, 1988. The added decibel reduction makes for less exterior noise being transmitted and not affecting the ambient decibel level of the interior. The benefit of this is it makes your home more comfortable by eliminating drafts, reducing the outside noise (up to 90% at some frequencies) and eliminating the hot or cold spots that are present throughout most households.
