The moment we have the plans for traveling or, rather, flying for some destination, we get down to the internet to make searches for the cheapest fares. This could be done months in advance or even at the last minute. The time is the element which is at our disposal and we use it in a manner to make the searches as we please.

The costs of making these searches is felt when the time passes by and we realize that there is no appreciable difference between the rates which are current on offer and the ones which were sometime back. We could have booked early and saved time, and freed our minds of the lingering additional work of finding cheap air tickets some days back. The first major cost that we incur by our continued search for the lowest air fare is of the opportunity cost of doing certain other things which could have been far more rewarding rather than saving a few bucks on the flight deals. Since people feel that they have the time at their disposal, they either do not use it sufficiently or over-use it. The former means that the savings which could have been done are lost while the latter results in opportunity costs. So, there has to be a dividing line on where and, more importantly, when, to stop looking for the lowest air fare and proceed with the flight booking.

Another cost that the people overlook is that of their unease and discomfort. In their over-enthusiasm to find and book the cheap air tickets, the people generally do not read, or have a tendency to conveniently ignore the cuts in the services which could have meant a more pleasant experience. The problem lies in their inability to reflect within themselves about what would make for their comfortable travel, what all services can they do without and what all amenities are a must for their air travel. This inability to gauge could be due to inexperience or due to a poor understanding of their air travel needs. So, the best way is to be practical, very practical and determine what all would be required during the flight and then decide on what would be its costs. This evaluation shall be done every time a flight is to be booked. Going for lowest air fare might be problematic in some situations.
