The Courier Driver Counts Down To Christmas
As every courier driver will know, we are fast approaching the time when the last
few loads of parcels will be taken out and delivered to anxious people waiting for their deliveries in the run up to Christmas. Even though we know when the big day will be each year "" after all it never moves "" some people still want to leave everything until the last minute.
Many of us look forward to that special moment each year when we can sit back and think, "aah"" we"ve done everything". For delivery workers, this moment doesn"t arrive until every parcel has been safely and speedily delivered to the person waiting for it. And to that end, it is useful to bear a few things in mind as the big day approaches.
Be organised
Planning the most efficient delivery routes is by no means an easy task for the courier driver. Not only do you have to consider drop offs, you have to think about collections as well. And yet you also need to be sure you don"t start collecting items before you"ve made some room in your van. However the truth remains that good organisation is one of the key skills every good courier driver should have. To an extent it comes with experience, but at this time of year you need those skills more than ever.
Be prepared
We"ve already had the threat of snow this year, and while things seem to have warmed up in some areas it doesn"t mean the snow won"t return. Furthermore there is always the chance of getting more severe weather in other ways, with heavy rain and strong winds being a significant possibility. To this end it makes sense to check the weather before you start work each day. Consider your delivery route and adjust it if necessary so you can better cope with seasonal variations. This should help you get through each day more easily than you might do otherwise.
Be Firm
You may also want to consider having an earlier cut off date for guaranteed Christmas delivery. Indeed, some companies will already have put this into place in order to make sure they do not end up with more parcels than they can physically deliver before the festive season. Just as customers can get caught out by ordering presents too late for the big day, so the courier driver can also be caught out if the proper procedures are not in place.
Be Calm
At the end of the day, everyone will be running round like crazy people making sure everything is in place and ready for the big festive season. But we can at least reduce some of that panic if we, as couriers, have the right rules and procedures in place to cope. And with that in mind, let"s look forward to a relaxing Christmas and some well earned time off.
