The Coward Dies A Thousand Times, The Brave Man Only Once (viking Proverb)
People hardly ever believe me when I say I would have heaps of Anger
, but it's true - so true that it entirely obscured some of the other fascinating things going on in my head
As Anger spent less and less time staying with me it became clear that I had one more unwelcome flatmate, far less clear but equally draining of my resources: Fear. Now, when I used to be angry people noticed, but because I have always had a more positive can-do attitude than the common average, my Fear is not one thing that I got(/get?) responses on. A pity - it might have been handy to know.
So what exactly is Fear? How does it manifest? It's surely a topic which has drawn in a great deal of attention in the world of self-development, and quite rightly so.
Now some of you might be saying, oh yes, but what about the great well-known quote Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway? As I have written somewhere else, I see this (fairly ...) empowering statement as second best. And second best is what you get if you don't aim for best.
Best is to know that you can leave behind Fear, and that suggests to know what it is, and the way it operates.
Fear is the perception that something bad will, or (more usually) might, occur. And that this is an issue.
Sometimes this sort of fear is concerning something quite probable - if your boss likes shouting at people and you've clearly stuffed up, what you fear is a clear possibility! Several other fears undeniably concern stuff in the better not go outside today - a satellite could land on my head category.
My suggestion is not to chip hopefully away at Fear of Satellite-Induced Head Injury Syndrome, instead to jump in at the deep end. Yes it's probably going to happen, yes it'll be a great deal of unFun, but yes, I have all the resources I need to come through in one piece, maybe stronger and delightful for it!
I frequently visit India. Few people fear India, presuming that it is a filthy dirty place flooded with poor people and beggars, a place where you will wait for several hours (or days) for late trains, be provided incorrect directions, fall prey to several diseases, skid on cow shit, and not be in a position to get a decent latte.
And when people ask me what India is like, I usually tell them exactly that (it's true, in fact ...) but with a big smile that says and that's not something to be bothered about, but can be heaps of great fun to embrace. And then I generally say You must go - it's great! Which it really really is. Not just due to the bits I didn't talk about (architecture food scenery culture people ) but because I know I have the resources essential to handle the less fun things, and because I consider one of the greatest favours I could do someone is to motivate them to figure out that they do too.
Do it anyway, certainly.
But scrap the Fear.
